Screwtop Wine Bar & Red Hook Lobster truck
Last Saturday, Clarendon's Screwtop Wine Bar hosted a special dinner menu in association with Red Hook lobster truck. From about 4:30 to 6:30pm that day, the Red Hook truck was parked directly across from the restaurant. Patrons were encouraged to walk over to the truck and purchase a lobster or shrimp roll seperately, then to buy a beverage to accompany it from Screwtop. The restaurant offered suggestions of which wine and beers to go with which style Red Hook rolls.
The combination was fun, but I ended up still being hungry and needed to snack on Screwtop's light and delicious grilled cheese sliders. They menioned this is planned to be a recurring theme, and I highly recommend it next time they come around!

Cupcake wars continue in Clarendon
The battle for cupcake supremacy was heating up this past weekend, as competition between Clarendon's bakeshops was increased during the pre-Valentine's Day weekend.
First the newcomer Crumbs makes a delicious alliance with neighbor Best Cellars and features their mini cupcakes along side local chocolates in the free wine and chocolate tasting last Tuesday.
This was just a prelude to a popular joint venture cupcake and wine tasting on Saturday, which paired about five wines from Best Cellars' collection with five Crumbs' mini cupcakes.
Not to be outdone, Bakeshop on Fillmore Street fired back with its own champagne and wine tasting. Our local Bakeshop fought back against the Crumbs Empire by allying with neighbor Screwtop Wine Bar for a free one hour tasting on Sunday. According to their Twitter feed, there were no cupcake survivors by 2:14 pm.
The most important question still remains: for the future battles, which wine shop will ally with Red Velvet when they come to Clarendon?
Apologies to The Cupcake Blog for leaching the image, but that little tank themed cupcake was too cool not to post.

AAC and AFAC Charity Happy Hour with Screwtop Wine Bar
They are also having a holiday food drive for Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC), so bring non-perishable goods to the event! AFAC especially needs low-sugar cereals, cooking oil, canned meats, and low-sodium canned soups. You will receive one additional raffle ticket per non-perishable item you bring for the food drive.

Screwtop Wine Bar outdoor seating
I tried the red wine flight, which offered three small portions of different flavors ranging from fruity to darker and dryer. I always recommend trying the samplers at any venue that offers them (like Lyon Hall's beer flight), just because I'm usually indecisive and its an easy conversation starter.
The grilled cheese sliders where delicious, although slight in portions. Screwtop is great dating venue, has a nice wine and cheese selection, some good appetizers but its not going to be cheap. There menu is a little bit confusing and needs to be streamlined a little. Overall I'm very happy with what Screwtop offers to the local nightlife and hope to go back soon, or to take some of their wine classes once they resume after August.
Thanks to Jason's DC Foodies blog for the image and a very thorough review of Screwtop.

Screwtop Wine Bar Coming Soon

Wendy's story of how she quit her six figure job to follow her dream of opening a small business in Clarendon was interesting enough to make AOL's homepage Monday.
She has an interesting strategy of trying to take advantage of the recession by going against the flow and opening a risky light commercial venue. I look forward to visiting Screwtop when the eventually move into 1025 N. Fillmore St.
Photo credit goes to Paul Moon again. Thanks!
