Margot MacDonald at Black Cat DC

Margot MacDonald, a local songwriter, vocalist and live looper, returns to Black Cat in DC this Thursday April 20 to embody the definition of a one-woman band. Her haunting and mesmerizing solo performances have earned her multiple "Artist of the Year" from the Washington Area Music Association. Margot goes onstage at 8pm with $12 cover.

Joining her at Black Cat at 9pm is Vita and the Woolf, an electronic soul pop music group from Philadelphia.

Derek Evry at Black Cat

Local favorite Derek Evry is taking the stage at Black Cat in DC on Friday March 10 for the first time playing in his own band. Derek frequents many Clarendon and DC venues often and is a huge part of our local music scene. In addition, the $12 show ($10 in advance) will feature more music and burlesque:

The Naked and Famous at 9:30

After this past weekend's Sunday Funday debauchery at A-Town for the Redskins' win, I'm spending this next weekend in the opposite direction. DC is hosting fun music options, starting with DJ Lil E and her legendary 90s mixes at Blackcat on Saturday, Oct 5 10pm.

The weekend will end strongly with The Naked and Famous' sold out show Sunday night 7pm at 9:30 club. Fronted by Alisa Xayalith (vocals/keyboards) and Thom Powers (guitar/vocals), the band debuted their new album In Rolling Waves. They just appeared on Craig Ferguson last night, and decided to add a second chance to see them on Monday Oct 7. Tickets are $35 and The Colorist is opening for them.

True Womanhood @ Black Cat tonight

Local indie/experimental/rock group True Womanhood will be performing at Black Cat again!

Black Cat praises TW as "definitely different. Tons of drums, a few homemade instruments, and some well-placed pop hooks makes for an experimental, energetic, and very entertaining show. Who doesn't love a band that loves double kick drums AND crafts?"

True Womanhood @ Black Cat

True Womanhood opened up the back stage at Black Cat tonight. A new indie band called Pow Wow, lead by the multi-talented shoe-gazer Mary Timony, followed them.

I liked TW's experimental indie tunes, with one of their songs (wish I could remember its name) having Radiohead-like overtures. But the most enjoyable aspect was Melissa's thumping bass tunes.

I wasn't a fan of the people waving streamers in the front row the whole time. Its cool that TW has support from friends to come out and participate in the show, but it seemed gimmicky. And their music could stand on its own without gimmicks.

And also, if you do ever wave streamers in front of a band's show, please please please wave them in accordance with the current beat of the song. Its fairly annoying when TW was playing a mellow tune and the streamer people were going crazy with their sticks and ribbons.

Looking forward to True Womanhood's experimental indie beats at their third performance at Black Cat this weekend!

I missed their last appearance, and was disappointed that I wasn't able to see Melissa's bass riffs in person.

There's alot going on this week at Black Cat, but I'll probably will miss it all due to bronchitis. Immune system fail =(

True Womanhood is playing on Wednesday! Been meaning to check out bassist Melissa Beattie's beats live.

Friday the entertaining Jupiter One is attacking the Rock and Roll Hotel in DC. I feel bad missing the Rasputina show on Monday.
