The Handsome Family at Iota
Husband and wife duo The Handsome Family is playing at Iota this Thursday, August 28. Known for the opening credits for HBO's "True Detective", this Americana/country/bluegrass band is sure to sell out this small Clarendon venue. The Handsome Family has been "blending murder ballads with hidden histories" since 1995 that draws on Gothic fiction and American folk music. Richard Buckner opens up for them at 8:30pm. $15 cover. Before that, Iota is playing the Redskins vs. Tampa football game starting 7:30pm.

Bracket Room Redskins draft party
Bracket Room is hosting a Redskins Draft Watch Party this Thursday, May 8 from 7 to 11pm. Washington Redskins own DeSean Jackson (#11 wide receiver) and DeAngelo Hall (#23 cornerback) will be present to talk with fans as they welcome in celebration the 2014 draft picks. Held at Radio City Music Hall in NYC and shown on ESPN, which I am expecting to be shown on almost all of Bracket Room's 35 big screens. It's a shame the Redskins gave up their first round draft pick this year (traded to the Rams in 2012), because we desperately need new hope after last year's 3-13 season.

Mike Mangione & The Union at Iota
Sunday is busy at Iota, with three bands playing that evening to round out this beautiful weekend. On Sept 29, Mike Mangoine and the Union play around 8pm. The Union is a five piece orchestral folk-rock outfit with a variety of strings, electric guitars and drums whose songs range from contemporary folk to blues.
Also playing that night is Kenny Kohlhaas and local Wes Tucker and the Skillets. A single $12 cover gets you access to all three performances Sunday night.
And if you get to Iota early, they will be playing the Redskins vs Raiders games starting at 4:25pm with no cover.

Gameday at Clarendon Grill
Ever since they remodeled and refreshed their menu, I've been pleasantly surprised with Clarendon Grill's brunch and lunch offerings. Pictured here is their delicious lump crab cake sandwich and potato crisps, which contained no filler at all!
The Grill was popular today as it made a good spot to watch the Redskins vs Titans game at 1pm with their multiple new flat screens and large projector screen filling in the stage. The new Grill's remodeled interior is much more comfortable and efficient than before, but there still wasn't enough seats to go around for all the Skins fans.
