Ocho de Mayo Block Party at Darna

Darna is having their annual block party bash this Sunday May 8. Pushing their Cinco de Mayo celebration back to the weekend lets Darna throw a large scale all day party with beer pong, piƱatas, and a car show. Grilled food like hot dogs, burgers and kabob are served with frozen Mexican bulldogs, margaritas and of course tequila. Darna has been throwing these outdoor parties for the past three years to mark the start of spring, and this year should be even bigger with their new second floor outdoor patio expansion. Music provided by DJ Heat , DJ EPX, DJ Pouria, DJ Hawa and DJ Vicious

Clarendon Cinco de Mayo block party

The weather today was an absolutely perfect day for Clarendon's Cinco de Mayo block party. Party goers who either bought tickets online or paid a little more at the door got to start out at Mad Rose, which had its patio and its neighor Sobe's outdoor seating packed. Music was pumped outside at each of the participating bars in this block party, but it wasn't loud enough to disturb anyone. There was outdoor grilling and alcohol, as well as some classic or hot cars that showed up. Pictured here was Darna's parking lot transformed into a packed outdoor party, with four large balloons marking the party from a distance.

La Union

Since there was a line around the block at Whilow's and everything else was packed for Cinco de Mayo, I tried a difference place that was much quieter past Ballston. La Union is easily passed by on 5517 Wilson Blvd, and its probably better that way.

I had high hopes for this casual Mexican/Salvadoran restaurant and that it would be a great whole-in-the-wall without ambiance and good food. The pupusas and Don Pepe Platter show here were good, but nothing special.

We also ordered the Boca Roja Frita fried red snapper, which proved to be a mistake. While it is listed on their menu for $13.95, they will charge you $15.95 or higher. When we asked they manager about the price discrepancy, he wasn't apologetic said it was "market price". I really don't like it when restaurants think they can charge you a difference price than advertised, and then try to argue with you over $2. Sorry La Union, I wanted to like you, but I will not be back.
