District Karaoke at RiRa

District Karaoke, the region’s only social, team-based karaoke league, is currently registering people for Monday nights at Ri Ra Irish Pub in Clarendon.

For 10 weeks, teams compete for a chance to go to the City-Wide Finals. Each night, teams compete in three rounds. The first two rounds are solo performances with a group performance for the third round. What makes District Karaoke special is that everyone at the bar, whether on a team or not, has an opportunity to score the performance. Winners are decided by smart phone voting using District Karaoke's web app.

At the end of the season, District Karaoke will host the top teams from every division at the City-wide Karaoke Championship on April 9, 2013 at Penn Social. Interested singers can register at here as "free agents," as an eight person team, or as a group. Membership costs $55.00 per person. Teams can have a maximum of eight players.

The Winter 2014 season will begin on January 13, 2014. While most of the DC locations are already full, there's still room on Mondays at Ri Ra in Clarendon and at Irish Channel in DC.

Clarendon Fitness karaoke finals at Mad Rose Tuesday

Clarendon Fitness is hosting it's karaoke finals at Mad Rose on Tuesday Sept 18. From 8:30-10:30pm, contestants will battle it  for prizes from many local restaurants and businesses. See Patch's event listing for more info on this fun and free event.

Tonight Mad Rose hosts its weekly Tuesday karaoke night. With only a few more weeks left in this event series, sponsor and Mad Rose's neighbor Clarendon Fitness is bush awarding over $6,000 in prizes to talented singers.

Karaoke Saturday nights at Sobe

I've been to Sobe before, and usually walk away dissapointed at both the food and the service. But this Saturday night I had an awesome time due to there weekly karaoke night. Every Saturday night starting at 8:30pm is open mic karaoke and every Friday night is a sing-along karaoke band.

We got there early, around 9pm and Sobe, the often overlooked restaurant next to Mad Rose, was still pretty sparesly populated. This gave us the chance to get good seats near the window with a great view of the amatuer performers.

The diverse crowd started picking up after midnight, with various singers including an office party full of suits,  black guys singing country, white girls singing "Baby Got Back", a 1920s themed dress birthday party, and an older man channeling Sinatra. It was a blast watching all the different groups get up on stange and sing a wide variety of hits.

I definately recommend checking Sobe out late on weekend nights, usually after midnight when the crowd is larger. I would stick with bottled beer when at the bar, as their mixed drinks are very watered down drinks and their wine tasted off.

Karaoke Championship @ Rock And Roll Hotel

Tonight featured a battle of amateur singers at the Rock And Roll Hotel on H street. Usually the karaoke contest is held at the nearby Sticky Rice sushi lounge. The Hotel was pretty well attended for a Tuesday night, and several of the karaoke performances featured creative props and memorable performances, for the better or worse.
