No Pants Sunday on the Metro

Be prepared to see some bare backsides this Sunday on the Metro! The annual No Pants Subway Ride DC is taking place in an especially cold January 11, where participants meet at L'Enfant Plaza station and ride the metro 3-5pm without pants while keeping a straight face. This cheeky event was started by Improv Everywhere in 2002 in New York and has now spread to other cities like DC. After party is at Cobalt in Dupont Circle.

Metro Stations Closed for Labor Day Weekend

Stupid Metro.

WMATA has decided to close three stations this Labor Day weekend, starting Friday night and lasting until Tuesday morning. The stations shutting down are:
  • Pentagon City
  • Crystal City
  • Reagan National Airport
Don't they realize the 9-11 Memorial 5k race is this Saturday in Crystal City, and many participants were planning on using the trains for it?

Oh, and Metro didn't bother to tell us about this until Sept 1st, so it will throw a wrench into all those people who were planning on using the train to get out of the airport.

Red Line Metro Train Collision

A horrific accident on the Metro happened today at 5pm on the Red Line. Apparently two trains collided head-on between the Fort Totten and Takoma stations. Some news agencies are reporting that one train actually ended up on top of the other train.

WJLA is currently reporting 1 fatality and 9 injuries. Washington Post doesn't have any more details either.

I received this text message alert from AlertDC at 5:45:

Metro reports that 2 train collided and one train is on top of the other train.
Metro reports massive injuries at this time. The green line and the red line are
affected. Further information to follow.

As someone who rides Metro regularly, I didn't think this type of accident was possible. Very scary.

Update 6/23/2009:

The casualty count is now 9 deaths and 76 injuries. The trains did not collide head-on, but instead one train ran into the rear of the first stopped train.
